# Live group runs

> Run with your group on a shared live map, with each runner's position, colour, and route updating in real time.

A live group run puts everyone in a group workout on one shared map while you
run. Your coach starts the session. Each runner who joins shares their GPS
position with the group and appears on the map with their own colour and
route trail. Use it for group long runs, track sessions, or any workout where
you want to see where the pack is.

Live group runs are available to everyone in the NexRex app. They are not
available in the Horizon app.

## Before you start

* The workout must come from a [group plan](/coaches/group-plans) and have
live group runs turned on. Workouts in a personal plan show a plain
  **Start workout** button instead.
* Only coaches can start a live session. Athletes can join a session once it
  is running.
* NexRex needs location access to share your position. Your location is
shared with the group only while the session is live.

## Start a live session (coaches)

You start the session from the workout roster.

1. Open **Today** in the coach view.
2. Tap the group workout to open its roster.
3. Tap **Start live session**.
4. Choose how you want to take part:
   * **Run with the group**: record your own run and appear on the group map.
   * **Supervise**: watch the live map without recording an activity.

NexRex sends each group member an invite that says your name started a live
group run.

You can also start the session from the workout itself. On a live-enabled
workout, the live-tracking control on the Today card and in the workout
preview reads **Start live session** for coaches. This includes workouts you
open from the coach plan calendar.

To finish, tap **End live session** on the supervise screen or in the workout
preview, then confirm. Live tracking stops for everyone in the workout. Each
runner's own run keeps recording. You can start the session again later from
the same workout.

<Note>
If you leave the session and come back, the button reads **Join live
session**. Tapping it puts you back into the session you already started
instead of opening a second one.
</Note>

## Join a live session

There are three ways in, so missing the invite doesn't lock you out.

* **Join sheet**: when your coach starts a session, NexRex opens a sheet with
the invite. Tap **Join and start running**, or tap **Not this time** to
  skip it.
* **LIVE badge**: a scheduled workout with a running session shows a **LIVE**
badge on the Today card. Tap the badge to open the join sheet.
* **Workout preview**: every scheduled workout has its own start controls, on
the Today card and in the workout preview. While a session is running, tap
**Join live session**. The **Start** button on the Home hero card also
joins the running session for today's workout.

Coaches and members share the same live-tracking control on a live-enabled
group workout. It works for every workout of the day, not only the first one,
and you can join at any point while the session is running, including after
you drop out.

| Situation | Coach sees | Member sees |
| - | - | - |
| No session is running | **Start live session** | **Join live session**, disabled, with "Available when your coach starts live tracking" |
| A live session is running | **Join live session** and **End live session** | **Join live session** |

**Start workout** always appears underneath, so you can do the workout as a
solo run instead. It starts a normal run and links it to the planned workout.
Workouts without live tracking show only **Start workout**. The controls
check for new sessions every 30 seconds, so **Join live session** turns on
soon after your coach starts one.

## Read the live map

The live map shows everyone in the session who is sharing their location.

* **Runner colours**: each runner gets their own colour. The colour is based
on the runner's account, so it stays the same when people join or drop out
during the run. Coach gold and your own accent colour are never given to
  other runners.
* **Route trails**: every runner's route is drawn on the map in their colour,
not only yours. Your app draws each trail from the positions it has
received. If you join late, you only see each runner's route from the
  moment you joined.
* **Side-by-side markers**: each marker shows the runner's name and pace.
When runners are close enough that their markers would overlap, such as at
the start line, NexRex lays them out side by side in rows of three around
the pack's centre. Every runner keeps their own full marker, so no marker
covers another. Zoom in to see runners at their exact positions. The coach's
supervise map uses the same layout.
* **Your marker**: your own marker has a thicker ring in your accent colour,
so you can pick yourself out of the pack.

Open **Participants** to see everyone in the session. Each row has the same
colour ring as that runner's marker and trail, so you can match a line on the
map to a person. Tap a runner to centre the map on them.

A runner whose updates stop arriving shows **Signal lost**.

## Leave the run screen during a run

You can use other parts of the app without stopping your run.

1. Tap **Back** (or use the back gesture) on the run screen. NexRex minimizes
the run. Tracking and live location sharing keep going.
2. To return, tap the bar above the navigation on Home. It reads **Run in
progress**, **Run paused**, or **Live group run in progress**.

To finish the run, tap **Stop** on the run screen. Back no longer ends a run.
This works for every run, not only live group runs.

## Stop sharing your location

Tap the **Sharing location** indicator during the run and confirm **Stop
sharing**. You disappear from the group map, but your run keeps recording.
Tap **Sharing off — tap to resume** to share again.

When your coach ends the session, NexRex shows **Coach ended the live
session**. Sharing stops, and you keep recording your own run.

## Set your sync frequency

The sync frequency controls how often NexRex shares your position during a
live group run. Sharing more often makes your marker move more smoothly for
the group. Sharing less often saves battery.

1. Open **Training Settings**.
2. Find the **Live Tracking** section.
3. Under **Sync frequency**, choose **1s**, **5s**, or **10s**.

The default is **5s**. NexRex saves your choice and uses it for every live
session you join. If you change it during a run, the new frequency applies
right away without leaving the session.

<Tip>
On a long run, pick **10s** to save battery. Other runners still see you
as connected. NexRex adjusts the **Signal lost** check to each runner's
actual update rate, so a slower setting doesn't mark you as lost.
</Tip>
